4 Things That Lead To Disobedience

Several things can lead to disobedience to God, but only one thing can lead you to being obedient. That is fear and reverence of God.

According to the KJV Dictionary, the fear of God is a “holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun everything that can offend such a holy being and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience.”

In a nutshell, to fear and revere God, you need to hate what He hates and love what He loves. Your heart must be positioned in a way that it would break your heart to break His.

Your reverence, respect, and honor for God must be so valuable that you would never think of letting him down. You need to fear God more than you fear man. You must fear the opinion of God more than the opinion of man.

Mand did not create you. Man cannot supply your every need. Man cannot be omnipresent and omnipotent. Man cannot protect you from the evil one. So, why do we revere the thoughts and opinions of man more than God?

Once you fear God, you will be less inclined to say no to His commands/instructions because you don’t want to disappoint Him. But, of course, as the world would have it, there are way more things that lead to disobedience than those that lead to obedience to God. Below I have listed just a few of them.

4 Things That Lead to Disobedience

  1. Wanting what feels good instead of what’s good for you.

God wants nothing but the best for us, and he knows what the best looks like. However, there are things in life that we need to do that is for our benefit that may not be the most enjoyable. There will be decisions we have to make for our benefit that won’t feel good to us.

For instance, we need to eat vegetables every day. What are the benefits? They provide us with essential minerals and vitamins, lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, etc. However, is it the most enjoyable thing to eat every day? Not really.

What would we enjoy eating every day? For me, chocolate cake. Eating chocolate cake every day would make me feel good and so happy. But would it be good for me? No.

God may give us instructions that would benefit our overall life, but it may not feel good to do it.

What God is calling you to do may not feel good, but it will undoubtedly be good for you. For example, he may call you to forgive someone who hurt you, which can be challenging. But releasing that offense into the spirit of forgiveness will close the door to the enemy to use you.

Carrying unforgiveness can block your blessings from being received. There is a reward waiting for you on the other side of obedience; that reward will feel better than harboring unforgiveness and resentment in your heart.

He may want you to let go of a relationship that no longer serves you. Yet, you find yourself holding on because you and this person have history and are comfortable even in your misery. Letting go of an unfulfilling relationship will be difficult, but what God has for you on the other side will be way more fulfilling, especially if what is on the other side is a relationship with you and Him.

2. Not trusting/knowing God

It is difficult to obey a God you do not trust and even harder to trust a God you do not know. Some of us may disobey because we have difficulty trusting the way God is leading us.

The instructions He gives may not make sense given your current circumstance. If you are having difficulty trusting how God is leading you, that is because you don’t know the God you serve.

I encourage you to spend more time with Him in His word. Read more scriptures on how He has moved in the lives of those in the Bible. Listen to a testimony of a fellow believer. What He does in the lives of others, He will surely do for you.

When Abraham trusted God, he became Father to the nations. Noah trusted God when it made him look like a fool, but it led to him saving and re-populating the earth. Gideon trusted God even when He shrunk his army down to just a few hundred even though he faced thousands in a battle. God still led him to victory.

The Bible provides evidence of where trusting God will lead you. So get in the good book and get to know your God. There is one thing you will know for sure when spending time with God. He doesn’t know how to fail you. He is incapable of letting you down. It’s impossible, can’t happen. God is a sure thing.

3. Thinking we know what’s better for us than God

It often confuses me when I see believers post things on social media about what they manifest in their life and how they are creating their destiny. I often wonder where God is in all this manifesting and creating.

I also wonder if they don’t tire themselves out trying to manifest and create things already created for them. It is pretty silly when you think about it.

It takes obedience and faith in your walk with the Father to reveal your destiny. So often, those looking to create their own destiny think they know what is better for their lives than God does. Impossible.

God knew you before he formed you. Before He created anything, He knew you. What did He know? He knew your name. He knew your favorite color. He knew your favorite ice cream. He knew every mistake you would make. He knew the life you would live and the path you would take.

He knew the beginning from the end. So, there is no way you can understand what is best for you better than God. So, let go of your manifestations and follow the life God created for you before the beginning of the world. You desiring your way will lead to you disobeying God’s way.

4. Fear

Fear is a crippling, deceiving spirit. It is not a fruit of the Holy Spirit of God. It comes from the enemy, who we know is a liar. So why do we believe in fear? Why do we allow it to keep us stuck and, more importantly, disobey God.

Please be aware that when you give in to fear, you are letting the enemy take precedence over your life more than God. You are bowing down to the devil. You allow the devil to rule and reign supreme over your decisions and future. Fear will keep you bound and stuck in a space you were not meant to be in or only meant to be in for a season.

Speak against the lies of fear. Tell fear, “you are more than a conqueror,” (Romans 8:37) that you can “do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” (Philippians 4:13) Remember that the Lord “knows the plans he has for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Speaking the word of God against fear is the only way to drown out the lies and submit to the obedience of Christ.

Although there are many reasons to disobey, there is one significant reason to obey God. He is your heavenly Father. Your creator. He is the only one that can do more for you than man. His plans for you are way better than what you create for yourself. Therefore, I pray that the only fear you allow to rule you is the fear of the Lord. Allow His reverence to enter your heart and lead you to a posture of obedience. I love ya’ll.

Yours Truly, Moe
